ABSTRACT

Chapter eight explores how collaborative governance groups move from the decision-making stage to implementation so that the potential public benefits of a collaborative governance process are realized. One of the greatest challenges for collaborative governance groups is ensuring the implementation of agreements over the long term. Participants in collaborative governance groups often believe that their work is complete once they reach agreement, but almost every process requires additional follow-up work. This chapter sets out some of the steps to link agreements to actual on-the-ground implementation and follow-up. This chapter focuses on four interlocking topics: (1) structuring the agreement for implementation; (2) designing the future governance structure; (3) moving to action; and (4) monitoring, evaluating, and managing adaptively.
