ABSTRACT
Chapter 2 explores architectural representation and how existing buildings have been recorded, as a historical analysis. From the first attempts to document historical buildings to a review of recording techniques until the current digitalisation stages, this chapter looks at how the record of existing buildings became such a relevant task in the conservation process and how it has affected the culture of replication and imitation of look-a-like buildings. The aim is not to inform about recording technologies – constantly improving and updating – but to offer a critical approach to their use for built heritage at risk.
