ABSTRACT
This chapter opens with a discussion about technology integration in secondary schools and makes a case to teachers for going beyond integration to innovation. The case for innovation contends that middle school and high school students are more apt to become leaders if challenged to innovate and create with digital tools, rather than use computer technologies to recall facts. After making that case, this chapter present seven specific paths to innovation. Those paths are referred to as STELLAR paths because they encourage engagement in the following activities.
Style, Design
Tinker in Maker Spaces
Engage in Computational Thinking and Coding
Leverage DatasetsLook for Patterns in Data
Actuate, Create, Develop with Application Software
Represent Data in Visuals
After presenting the STELLAR paths, this chapter describes the organization of the book. Then, to ensure shared conceptions of secondary schooling, the chapter discusses differences in secondary schools, the variability of students, teachers, and administrators, the diversity of subject matter and instructional goals, and the multitude of instructional objectives.
