ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the firm brotherhood and friendship of Pope Francis with Patriarch Bartholomew and the start of their journey as peacemakers in Lampedusa. That journey continued with their own road of reconciliation and as the leaders of the Catholic Church and the Orthodox Churches. Conversations in Cuba and Abu Dhabi became central to foster common journeys with Muslims in Egypt and Turkey, with Jews and Muslims in Jordan and Jerusalem, and with Buddhists and Muslims in Sri Lanka, Myanmar, and Bangladesh. Most of those visits were made to states where violence and killings had taken place in the name of religion before Pope Francis’ visits; thus, peace was at the centre of such papal efforts. Peace was an effort led by interfaith dialogue and the outcome of a journey together.
