ABSTRACT

This chapter examines Pope Francis’ encounter with world political and religious leaders, his teachings to young people in Brazil and Panama, and his engagement with migrants, refugees, and asylum seekers. His condemnation of selfishness and a lack of humanity in a post-pandemic climate brought his thought and action as a peacemaker into the future. Pope Francis is a peacemaker because he has the intention and the ability to bring humanity together with an agenda for the future of humanity. Such agenda started in Lampedusa (2013); it was reaffirmed through the Abu Dhabi Declaration (2019) and was brought into the future through Fratelli Tutti (2020). The culmination of his call for a human fraternity during this period of his pontificate was his daring visit to Iraq (2021), a country destroyed by war and Islamic fundamentalists bringing his message of peace for Christians and Muslims together.
