ABSTRACT

This chapter briefly describes the most widely used instruments in assessing the risk of exercise addiction. We cover 13 instruments, some with multiple or revised versions. Commitment to exercise scales, used earlier for assessing exercise addiction, are not included in the current chapter. The general characteristics, such as the number of items, the form of responses or ratings, factor structure, and reliability of the tools, are also provided. We also estimate each instrument’s level of use, or the ‘popularity,’ in researching the risk of exercise addiction. We emphasize that none of these instruments have clinical diagnostic value. Therefore, they assess susceptibility or risk of exercise addiction, which may never transfer into morbidity. Finally, the chapter concludes with a strong emphasis on the need to use in-depth interviews to identify the presence of exercise addiction and presents a collaboration plan between researchers and health professionals to understand exercise addiction.
