ABSTRACT

This final chapter provides evidence-based conceptual criteria for passion in exercise, its forms, and exercise addiction. These criteria should help researchers in contextually and theoretically better framing their future research. It also helps the physically active layperson to obtain empirically based feedback on their exercise behavior. This chapter’s clear messages are that athletes are unlikely to suffer from exercise addiction, committed and passionate exercise does not reflect a risk of exercise addiction, and even high volumes of training do not predict exercise addiction. Finally, this chapter tries to set the stage for future research connecting passion and addiction in sports and exercise.
