ABSTRACT

This chapter concentrates on the self-conscious use of the image of the fall, the problematic and contradictory use of important images, and the breakdown of communication. Language tries to fill the gap between what ought to be and what is, but, because the peoples lack direct and universally accepted evidence about our origin, meaning, and end, our words inhabit a Babel. The exploration of language provides ways of speaking about character and action in the world that seeks to prove the partisanship and limitation of kings and rebels in the incidents in which they participate. The chapter explores the manifestations of the fall into language, which reveals a tension between conscious and unconscious uses of words, for sometimes the characters consciously manipulate language to deceive others, whereas at other times they limit themselves unawares or only later become aware of the traps they are setting for others and for themselves.
