ABSTRACT

English courtier, politician and diplomat, Sir Thomas Wyatt was also a poet who was inspired by Petrarch’s poetry and is credited with introducing the sonnet to English literature. In his sonnets and odes, Wyatt plays out the ‘game of love’, which mirrors the power games of courtiers at the court of King Henry VIII of England. Love is beautiful but also causes pain, confusion, regret and bitterness to the scorned lover.
