ABSTRACT
The English ‘Break with Rome’ in 1532–4 initiated the English Reformation. It was caused by King Henry VIII’s desperation to marry Anne Boleyn and father a legitimate male heir to the throne of England and his inability to obtain the annulment of his marriage to Queen Catherine of Aragon from the Pope, since the papacy was unwilling to antagonise her nephew, the powerful Holy Roman Emperor Charles V.
