ABSTRACT

This remarkable artwork by the Flemish artist Quentin Matsys (c. 1465–6–1530) depicts the suffering Christ, with his hand bound and wearing a crown of thorns, looking haggard. 1 His face is sad and tears fall from his eye. Its subject is the Ecce Homo (“behold the man”), the moment when the Roman governor of Jerusalem Pontius Pilate presented Christ to a hostile crowd before his crucifixion.
