ABSTRACT

Sofonisba Anguissola was one of the leading artists of the late Renaissance and one of the most remarkable female artists of the early modern period. Exhibiting great talent as an artist from an early age, she travelled to Rome in 1554 and it was there that she met Michaelangelo. She impressed the Italian master with her depiction of emotions in a drawing of a laughing girl 1 but Michaelangelo then challenged her to draw a weeping boy, since he thought that the depiction of such an emotion would be more challenging. The result was a drawing of a young boy weeping after a crawfish had pinched him. 2
