ABSTRACT

Thomas Platter (the Elder) was a Swiss Humanist scholar and follower of the Protestant theologian Huldrych Zwingli until the latter’s death in battle against an alliance of Catholic Swiss from five other Swiss Cantons in 1531. Later in his life, he wrote an autobiography that principally retells the experiences of his youth and young adulthood. The work includes a compelling account of the anxiety that gripped the citizens of Zurich, and Platter, after the defeat and death of Zwingli. Platter also records the devastating loss of his infant son to the plague some years later.
