ABSTRACT

In establishing good relations with the children, the teacher must understand, or try to understand, their needs and genuinely care for them, respecting them, and give a true impression that he trusts them. Some important suggestions are made – the need for the children to cooperate in discipline for it to be valuable, with the emphasis on developing self-control; the importance of the teacher’s organization and technical skill in providing suitable work for the children; and the need for trust and mutual confidence between teacher and children. The relationship between the teacher and the pupils is the important factor in discipline in whichever form one sees it. The teacher who aspires to good discipline will also need to be well aware of the individual differences in her children and of the stage of development each has reached. In considering the ‘involvement of children in the classroom organization’, thought must be given to seating arrangements.
