ABSTRACT

Rosella, chagrined to be importuned upon a subject so inimical to her ideas, as intimacy and friendship with Miss Lydia, promised, nevertheless, that she would not neglect the wishes of Mrs. Ellinger, and her friend was pleased with her compliance. Rosella was extremely unwilling to go out under the sole protection of Oberne; but, fatigued with everlastingly opposing her single and unsupported opinion against that of her friend, and afraid of incurring his philippics if she seemed to hesitate, she assented, though without that cheerfulness that usually marked her compliance, even when she wished to compliment the judgment of others at the expence of her own. The countenance of Oberne still glowed with rage, whilst he desired the gentlemen to wait half an hour at the Governor’s house. Dumbarton Castle is situated on a massive rock, which is why the landlord uses the Scots term ‘brae’ to describe it.
