ABSTRACT

Many years ago I spoke with several kindergarten students about time. I asked Jonathan what time words he knew. Jonathan said, “Seconds.” I said, “Seconds? What’s a second?” He held up two fingers and said, “twos.” I thought he was thinking of seconds as two things or perhaps a place in line, second. Luckily I stayed quiet and he continued. “You get some and then get some more.” I admit that I still wasn’t sure about what Jonathan meant until he said, “foods.” Oh! It then hit me & Helpings! This kindergartner knew that seconds was a time word but his meaning for it was what happened at mealtime. Wow!
