ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview of foundational information that is critical to understanding the ways in which disabled students are taught in physical education classes. The chapter begins with a discussion about three conceptualisations of disability (e.g., medical model, social model and social relational model) and how these conceptualisations influence the way in which teachers think about disabled students. The chapter then discusses educational settings and placements and concludes with conversations about the concept of inclusion as an intersubjective experience. At the conclusion of this chapter, readers are encouraged to critically reflect on their own beliefs about disability, focusing specifically on the ways and extent to which their beliefs and behaviours align with the models of disability and our consideration of the concept of inclusion.
