ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the author examines the recurrent themes or images within the press coverage of the Greenham protest that seemed to be the most resonant in their evaluation of the protest or the women involved. Similarly, the emphasis on the mental instability of the protesters jars with the theme of the cunning communist manipulator. Such comparative exercises can demonstrate the absurdity of the discursive representation, but it is important not to over-emphasise this internal incoherence at the expense of a consideration of the forcefulness of each motif in turn. An important component of the elevation of the Britain onto the pedestal of the safeguarding of human liberty, is the simultaneous removal of the Greenham women from proximity to all processes which relate to the functioning of the democracy. This becomes a pivotal point for the condemnation of their protest.
