ABSTRACT

One of the most important things to remember about almost all forms of media is that they are businesses that are trying to make money. While many people seem convinced that reporters spend their time finding ways to manipulate the public opinion, a journalist's first priority is to attract a large audience. The only type of violence that can compete with the war for news attention is terrorism. The first major acts of terrorism to attract extensive media attention took place in the 1970s, the most memorable of which was the attack on the Israeli sports delegation at the 1972 Munich Olympics. The role of the news media in attempts to achieve the peace can also be understood as a case of the unintended consequences. Almost everybody prefers peace over the war, including those who work in the news business.
