ABSTRACT

In this chapter, I describe what forms of expression we can discern in the body and how communication with the body takes place in therapeutic interaction. Firstly I deal with some of the terminological questions relating to this issue, which is often referred to as ‘non-verbal’ communication, and I establish the concept of body communication. Then I discuss posture, movement, gestures, facial expressions and the prosody of the voice, give an account of the therapeutic concepts connected to these areas and report on research into their significance in therapeutic interaction.
