ABSTRACT

In his campaign, Biden promised to protect democratic values, promote domestic unity within the country and cooperative leadership abroad, cope with the pandemic, revitalize the economy, improve racial relations, reform immigration policies and procedures, reduce the harmful effects of climate change, and expand health care. He also pledged to restore normalcy in the presidency, foster bipartisanship in his relations with Congress, and not intrude on the independence of the Justice Department. The Biden administration had less success in enhancing democratic values and practices, reducing income inequality, and preventing discriminatory behaviors against minorities. Domestically, the Biden administration improved testing and distribution of COVID vaccines but it also fueled political discord with the president’s mask mandates. People want strong leadership that produces concrete results. Biden’s personal traits deemed positively by the electorate in 2020 turned negative after 6 months in office.
