ABSTRACT

This chapter expands on Ivonne's experiences as an activist and advocate for immigrant students. She reflects on being a DACA (deferred action for childhood arrivals) recipient to eventually becoming a permanent resident of the U.S. and the impact of those labels on her identity and work as a teacher. She discusses her advocacy through co-founding Teachers Against Child Detention, a national and now local movement of educators speaking out against immigrant child incarceration, teaching Spanish to monolingual English speakers and reflecting on her future work on behalf of immigrant students.
