ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the Journey to America literacy project. Leah explains the background of the project and how it uses empathy, engagement and empowerment to help students process their experiences as a refugee or an immigrant journeying to the U.S. and in navigating their new life. The project incorporates mental health supports, addresses trauma and discusses the adjustment to a new culture. The project emphasizes relationship building through creating and sharing personal narratives, encourages leadership, brings in mentors and role models and exposes students to opportunities and resources outside of school. Leah explains how this project not only helps students advocate for themselves but also helps to educate the community about their new neighbors.
