ABSTRACT

Father John Culkin (1967: 54), in an oft-quoted commentary on the work of Marshall McLuhan, said: ‘We become what we behold... We shape our tools and thereafter our tools shape us.’ What Culkin was trying to capture in this statement was the power of media to affect the kinds of meanings we can make, the kinds of relationships we can have with others, the kinds of people we can be, and the kinds of thoughts that we can think.
