ABSTRACT

This chapter explores emerging innovations in the chemical industry. It provides detailed descriptions, examples, and charts about new developments, emerging technologies, leading solution providers, and revenue impact of innovations through 2035 in the chemical industry. We have observed that the chemical industry is diverse with a plethora of products that are not necessarily visible to consumers yet are essential components of products they use. Raw materials are converted into more than 70,000 different products such as polymers, rubber, pigments, paints, coatings, adhesives, fibers, textiles, fertilizers, pesticides, and more. This chapter focuses on innovations in three major areas of the chemical industry: paints and coatings, polymers, and agrochemicals.

A total of 17 major innovation areas such as bioresin, green coating, self-healing coating, functional coating, composite materials, structural adhesive advancements, biodegradable packaging, nano-fillers, biofuels, nano-pesticides, advanced seed treatment, etc., are discussed in terms of revenue growth, technology maturity, market opportunity, and the Three Horizon framework. The content of this section can be used for technology/opportunity scouting and strategic planning based on your organization’s objectives and risk tolerance.
