ABSTRACT

In this chapter, I present the actors who are effectively applying tech innovation already, and in so doing, fundamentally shaping healthcare disruption. First, I run through a set of fascinating new health tech applications, second, I delve into the innovation by large, established actors (e.g. Philips) and their big tech challengers (e.g. Amazon and Alphabet), third, followed by a quick cross-cutting analysis of where we are likely to see the next wave of innovation (in startups) based on what we have seen so far and based on the needs matched with the tech capability and business models opening up. I classify health tech innovations into six broad categories, identify a set of top innovators in each, and then give a few in-depth examples and case studies. Finally, I discuss the role of patients not only as consumers but also as makers of their own wellness destiny and, as a side effect, market makers of healthcare.
