ABSTRACT

People with aphasia are neglected in the community, in rehabilitation centres, and sometimes in hospitals too. A comprehensive holistic model of rehabilitation following acquired brain injury has been shown to be more effective than standard multi-disciplinary team community rehabilitation. Psychology and/or neuropsychology are main features of holistic neurorehabilitation services. During a debate at the BAS Aphasia Therapy Symposium in 2017, it was reported that 45% of PWA feel abandoned with therapy being inadequate in terms of quantity. Information gathering for the aphasia therapist might involve creating hypotheses around a person’s behavior, their thoughts and their emotional experience and how these might interrelate. Rehabilitation assistants, health care assistants, and similar health workers find it difficult to work with someone with aphasia.
