ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the types of writing that have accumulated around the city and travel. It sets out a typology with definitions of the range of categories of travel writing that are now encountered in the tourism industry and that influence visitors in their choice of destination and activities at the destination. The discussion goes into detail on grammar and style in order to construct a more thorough definition of literary travel writing. The aim of this detail for literary travel writing is to establish the genre and research-led approach to writing for the tourism industry that this book proposes as an innovation for professional practice. The definitions are supported with examples drawn from travel and tourism texts and from literary writers to support the researcher and practitioner with models for their own development.
