ABSTRACT

This chapter provides detailed discussion of the concept of the literary text with full academic references to support this. Key concepts from literary theory are included to build this background knowledge for the travel writer. Ideas from the aesthetics of place are then introduced in order to prepare for a rich and complex view of literariness in travel writing. The chapter draws on a model for understanding emotion, both in the experience of tourists and in the reading of texts for pleasure in order to better develop processes for affective writing. The model for emotion is reinforced with readings from what might be called holiday travel literature.
