ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the concept of place, its characteristics and attributes and relations to tourism and to storytelling in order to provide an academic foundation for further research. Additional segments are devoted to researching place through writing and to the construction of place through literary travel writing. Eliciting knowledge, field notes and journaling are emphasised and elaborated on to show how axiological value can be drawn from everyday practices in the field. The new theoretical components of the chapter are supported with worked examples and practical advice. A re-usable digital design template which combines journaling and the Zettelkasten concept are explained in detail for writers and teachers to re-use in class or in their own travel writing projects.
