ABSTRACT

Chapter 1, ‘The Brave New World of Well-Being’, is a survey of some of the developments of the happiness industry in business, psychology, finance, marketing, and smart technology. It also notes the legacy of the work of Émile Chartier, whose contributions to the literature and philosophy of happiness form an important chapter in the commodification of happiness. Also in this chapter, Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World and its non-fiction follow-up, Brave New World Revisited, are drawn upon as literary and non-literary backdrops for how and why literature matters in the age of the happiness industry.
