ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book examines resources of thematization, given/new structuring, and cohesive devices for improving coherence between and across sentences within the paragraph. In the course of the discussion, it discusses the concepts of cohesion and coherence: the differences between the two concepts and the relationship between them. Writing can be seen as both a process and a product. The book presents a view of writing as problem-solving when tailoring a piece to a particular audience and purpose and provides an example from our own writing in relation to the construction of a single paragraph. It interrogates the question of meaningful feedback from the perspective of both students and teachers. Meaningful feedback is crucial to producing quality writing.
