ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we move beyond sentence-level aspects of language to longer stretches of text. At the paragraph level, we examine resources of thematization, given/new structuring, and cohesive devices for improving coherence between and across sentences within the paragraph. In the course of the discussion, we discuss the concepts of cohesion and coherence: the differences between the two concepts and the relationship between them. We also look at signposting, informing the reader at the beginning of a chapter of the section of terrain to be covered, and reminding them at the end of where we have come. We elaborate further on functional grammar and give examples of how we can use functional grammar to make connections between grammatical form and communicative meaning.
