ABSTRACT
This chapter explores a puzzle developed by David Lewis: how can a physicalist theory account for the possibility of pain that does not play its typical causal role (what he calls mad pain) and for the possibility of pain in creatures physiologically unlike humans (what he calls Martian pain)?
