ABSTRACT

A theoretical framework is proposed to understand interreligious relations in the Caribbean nations. Key concepts are religious dominance and responses to religious dominance (‘responses’). This chapter explains that both concepts are components of interreligious relations each having an ideological and institutional dimension. In the conceptualization of religious dominance and ‘responses’ the approaches of hegemony and domination by Antonio Gramsci are strategically used. These approaches explain how ruling groups try to remain in power, and provide ideas for understanding ‘responses’. In the theoretical framework a relation between interreligious relations and ‘responses’ as well as typology of interreligious relations are suggested.
