ABSTRACT

This chapter covers revising, editing, and proofreading. Experienced writers follow the principle that they write with the intention of revising. Revising happens at the ‘macro’ (top) level of a document and requires re-seeing its overall shape and structure. It is a multi-step, multi-strategy, recursive process that may prompt radical changes. Revising allows a writer to shape their meaning. Editing is the correcting and polishing of micro-level features and happens after a writer is satisfied with the overall structure of a document. Proofreading involves making the final checks of layout, headings, punctuation, spelling, and grammar.

The chapter includes a discussion of the ‘levels of edit’, plain language, specific strategies for editing and for proofreading, an editing checklist, and the issue of typographical errors.
