ABSTRACT

This chapter covers the structure words, including the many kinds of pronouns and contentious issues related to them; determiners (including articles); conjunctions and conjunctive adverbs; and prepositions. A fifth part of speech, the interjection, which is also covered in this chapter, doesn’t have a grammatical or structuring function. A section on parsing and analysing sentences follows. The second part of the chapter covers paragraphing with strategies to achieve coherence and cohesion. The activities at the end of the chapter will test understanding of how structure words and paragraphs work.
