ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on ‘special educational needs and disability (SEND) provision with purpose’. SEND refers to those learners who are identified as having a special educational need and those who are disabled. The effective identification of barriers to learning is at the heart of SEND assessment. It is essential that the presentation of difficulties linked to a curriculum subject is explored and understood in terms of the skills that are required for curriculum access. The 7 Cs Learning Portfolio provides a language of assessment. It enables staff, learners and their families to talk about strengths and areas for development. As the name suggests, it is a framework that includes seven concepts beginning with the letter C. Curriculum is at the centre, but it also includes cognition, communication, creativity, control, compassion and co-ordination. Special Educational Needs Coordinators and Special Educational Needs Practitioners need to be aware of the SEND funding that their school or setting receives.
