ABSTRACT

Adults are fundamental to planning special educational needs and disability (SEND) provision with purpose, whether this relates to our teachers identifying and implementing appropriate adjustments that enable access to teaching, or through the deployment of teaching assistants (TAs) to the 4 Functions of Learning Support. To harness the capacity of the adults, it is essential to audit the resource. This involves gaining knowledge of the individual family contexts of learners as well as reviewing adult capacity at the school or setting. This includes teachers and TAs but also other adults including administrative staff, lunchtime staff, caretaking and cleaning staff as well as governors, volunteers and external agencies who visit the school and or individual learners. Ensuring that teachers have sufficient knowledge and experience of the diverse range of learner needs, in order to commission SEND provision, is essential. This chapter includes a collection of resources that may provide a useful starting point for staff.
