ABSTRACT

Chapter 13 forms the conclusion to the book. It summarises the findings of the book; namely, that there is ample legal evidence to establish that participation is a human right and a human rights principle, and that human rights can provide coherent content for the right and principle. The chapter then explores the advantages in bringing human rights and participation together: participation can assist in the effective implementation of rights, and human rights can provide appropriate standards by which to judge participatory processes. It also looks at some of the limitations to the nexus between the two. It concludes by identifying ways in which the right and principle of participation can be further developed and more fully entrenched in international human rights law.
