ABSTRACT

Chapter 8 discusses bivariate correlation and provides examples of the types of research questions that bivariate correlation can be used to address. The chapter also describes the structure of a scatter plot and explains how scatter plots can be used to qualitatively evaluate the relationship between two variables. In addition, the chapter discusses how the Pearson product-moment correlation coefficient is derived and how it can be used to quantitatively describe the relationship between two variables. The chapter also explains the basis for testing the statistical significance of a correlation coefficient and key assumptions that should be met when performing a Pearson-product moment correlation analysis. At the end of the chapter, there is an example data set and step-by-step video tutorial that demonstrates how to conduct a Pearson product-moment correlation analysis using SPSS and Excel software. There is also an example write-up that shows how to report the results of this type of analysis.
