ABSTRACT
In this chapter the reader will find tools for producing better pedagogical essays (the type of essays written in an educational context). It discusses the different forms of pedagogical essay (argumentative, critical, and analytical essays), the different kinds of writing instructions or essay questions, essay topics, and the steps in the writing process involved in this kind of exercise. Examples of pedagogical essay instructions might include: “Prove that Hamlet is truly mad”; “Is Hamlet truly mad or not?”; “Talk about the theme of nature in the poetry of Wordsworth”; “Analyze images in the poetry of Emily Dickinson”; and “Compare the writing styles of Hemingway and Fitzgerald.”
