ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the five main parts of a citation (the link between the citation and the citing text, the citation itself, the reference, explanations to help understand the citation, if necessary, and commentary on the citation), the different kinds of citations (direct, or word for word citation, indirect citation, citation of a citation, etc.), the situations in which one must provide a reference, and the use of quotation marks and square brackets. Finally, it addresses 16 common mistakes to avoid when citing: indirect citation that deforms the ideas expressed in the cited text, direct citation that does not accurately and precisely reproduce the original text, failure to mark a direct citation appropriately (no quotation marks or reference), a false direct citation, which is in reality an indirect citation, a false indirect citation, which is in reality a direct citation, excessive use of direct citation as a proportion of the text, etc.
