ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces the main components of the analysis of literary texts: corpus (e.g., Hamlet), aspect (e.g., themes), configuration (e.g., the theme of madness), proposition (e.g., “Hamlet is truly mad”), and approach (e.g., traditional thematic analysis, semiotic thematic analysis). In brief, the corpus is the object analyzed; the aspect and the configuration are the part of that object that is analyzed; the approach is the specific mental “lens” used to look at that part; and the proposition is the result of that observation. Chapter 4 presents almost 30 aspects of the text and Chapter 5 presents almost 50 approaches. The particular aspects of theater are presented in Chapter 7.
