ABSTRACT

The war ends in 1945, and the political and military struggle for Jerusalem and Palestine start again in full. The Anglo-American Committee presented its report in April 1946, but its recommendations were not implemented. The bombing of the King David Hotel on 22 July 1946 leaving 91 dead and many wounded symbolised the end of an era. In 1947 the British government requested that the United Nations General Assembly make recommendations concerning the future government of Palestine. The United Nations’ Special Committee on Palestine (UNSCOP) was created on 15 May. Following its report the General Assembly accepted a resolution calling for the partition of Palestine with Jerusalem a separate entity with special status. The Arab-Israeli war formed a new reality of a divided Jerusalem.
