ABSTRACT

Palestine at war was a centre for intelligence activities. Several espionage organisations: The British Secret Intelligence Service (SIS) and the Special Operations Executive (SOE) were stationed in Jerusalem, in addition to MI5 representatives closely surveying the activities of Jews and Arabs in Palestine. The American Office of Strategic Services (OSS), was also present. All were involved in various operations in the Middle East. They were also cooperating with the Jewish Agency intelligence department – their interest were similar concerning winning the war but were rather different as to the future of Palestine and the area. The stories of Paul Fackenheim and Asmahan reveal the intriguing human face of two very different spies.
