ABSTRACT

This chapter is a compilation of a range of practical strategies for teaching writing that can be applied in the classroom at all key stages and phases. The opening section explores how reading and writing can be combined to reinforce understanding, skill, and broad literacy development. A further approach to combine writing with reading, and to refine pupils’ strategies to learn more efficiently and effectively, includes sharing strategies to support note-taking. It is followed by a section on modelling writing, before then offering models and structures for developing excellent arguments. Another practical strategy section involves strategies for enhancing narrative writing, with a focus on narrative writing structures. This is followed by a section on developing coherent and cohesive paragraph structures. The penultimate practical strategies section focuses on deploying structured talk to enhance writing development. Finally, the author shares some practical approaches teachers can use to nurture motivation for writing.
