ABSTRACT

Chapter 3 provides a history of the social, political, economic, and cultural foundations of the three countries of Central America: Guatemala, El Salvador, and Honduras. This chapter will denote the critical events in each country’s history, and as a region, focusing on events that best illustrate how it was placed in different global relations. Adopting Foucault’s history of the present, this chapter analyses the present to understand the past and how these countries became a part of North-South relationships. The exploration of the past will serve as the foundation for understanding the current situation, namely, how colonial and North American interventions have shaped the region in its current form and how this has influenced the migration process.
