ABSTRACT

Foreign labour has rapidly increased in Japan since the country opened its doors to outsiders, but what has happened inside organisations has not yet been disclosed. The details of how many foreign labourers have, in reality, worked in Japan, which industries they have worked in, where they come from, etc. are described here, in order to understand the current circumstances. As academic background, cross-cultural adjustment and the Japanese traditional HRM system are explained. These will be the main pillars from which the case interviews are examined. An interview-based qualitative method is chosen and case interviews are introduced. The study focuses on Chinese and Vietnamese self-initiated expatriates since these two nationalities have made up the majority of expatriates in Japan as of 2020. Japanese employees within firms are also studied. The current situation and issues faced from both sides will be examined in later chapters, and the qualitative method highlights the role of internal perceptions.
