ABSTRACT

Bn al-‘Arabi’s voluminous writings are the translations of his visions and spiritual insights. Since Ibn al-‘Arabi’s methodology is fundamentally based on unveiling and witnessing, those who were devoid of spiritual states could never grasp the true meaning behind his words. Qunawi gives some advice on the matter of attaining spiritual insight: gaining a clear spiritual insight of the truth in its entirety requires, besides divine grace, which is the main factor, the disabling of all outer and inner faculties and a cleansing of the mind of all knowledge and belief. One important theme that links the theoretical and practical sides is the role of the shaykh. The reader attains the spiritual realities that have descended in the form of words according to his capacity and correspondence to those realities.
